DESCRIPTION
Ideas and projects on Zurich's urban development
1850 - 2009
24.11.2010 - 12.03.2011
The city of Zurich has been striving for greater things since 1850. Dozens of projects were intended to transform the "small metropolis". The exhibition shows projects, visions and utopias about Zurich from the founding years to the present day and explores the question of why the city is built the way it is today.
The exhibition was organized by the Department of Culture in collaboration with the Architectural History Archive of the City of Zurich.
The exhibition shows a selection of proposals, from the Federal Palace on the shores of Lake Zurich in the mid-19th century to a new congress center on the same site. Valuable pictures and plans, some of which have never been shown before, illustrate the projects. They are complemented by models and a projection in the atrium of the Stadthaus. Explanations of the objects presented help to place the proposals in a wider context.
On the second floor, projects on or in the lake are on display, while the second floor shows projects that aimed to reorganize Zurich in terms of urban planning or transport. A look beyond the city limits and an excursion into the world of sport and fiction complete the picture.
The initiators and the idea behind each design are presented and the fate of the projects is described. Why did they fall by the wayside?
The exhibition poses questions: Is Zurich not born to achieve higher things? Does nothing outstanding succeed? Is Zurich "the capital of progressive small minds"? (NZZ am Sonntag, June 7, 2009) Or can we count ourselves lucky to have been spared spectacularity? (City of Zurich Culture)
