DESCRIPTION
As part of an extensive overland trip, I traveled the United States of America in 2024 together with my long-time school friend Michael Stürm. Starting in New York, our journey took us counterclockwise from the East Coast to the West Coast and back to New York. The route was determined by architectural focuses coupled with questions about mobility, culture and society. In six weeks, we visited 28 states and covered around 10,000 miles by road, dividing the journey into three stages: I - on the road from New York to Chicago, II - on the train from Chicago to San Francisco, III - on the road from San Francisco to New York.
Our main architectural interest was the work of Louis Kahn. We visited a selection of his epochal buildings in New Haven, Exeter, San Diego, Fort Worth and Philadelphia. Personal access to the Louis Kahn Archive at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia rounded off our exploration. (Fawad Kazi)
