TASK STATEMENT
Vienna is growing - 2 million people will live in Vienna by 2030. If Vienna wants to maintain its leading role in terms of quality of life in an international comparison, the right measures need to be taken in the area of public transport. The inner-city network in particular is already experiencing the greatest congestion at the expense of passenger comfort. It therefore makes sense to continue expanding the network.

The new U5 will create a connection between Hernals and the city center. The new U5 will connect Hernals from Karlsplatz via the stations Museumsquartier, Volkstheater, Rathaus and the new stations Frankhplatz-Altes AKH, Arne-Carlson- Park, Michelbeuern-AKH and Elterleinplatz, which are currently served by the U2. In return, the U2 will be routed on a new line from Schottentor to Matzleinsdorfer Platz and then on to Wienerberg.

The subject of the realization competition is the architectural design of the appearance of the new U5 underground stations and the reception buildings on the surface, including the surface design of the immediate surroundings. (Part A - Competition rules (extract), 2014)

DESCRIPTION

Origami (Japanese, from oru = to fold + kami = paper) is the art of paper folding.

Introduction
This project proposal is primarily based on the consistently developed and implemented planning of the Architektengruppe U-Bahn (AGU) - a simple, solid and low-maintenance modular system with a clear design language and a high identification factor. With the "origami principle", these proven AGU systems are synthesized with a new design language. Experience gained from the more recent line design (U2), particularly with regard to materialization, will also be taken into account. The atmosphere is restrained and elegant, supported by the choice of materials and lighting.

Design
Partial elements of the modular system - in particular wall and ceiling panels - are now designed as folded surfaces. The folding gives the elements an independent character. The above-ground entrances and exits are each covered with a folding glass structure. This refers to the new design language used in the stations and gives them - by day and night - a significant appearance with a high recognition value. The glass color is based on the turquoise blue line color of the U5.

Materialization
The planned range of materials is based on the already tried and tested materials - enamel for wall and ceiling panels, granite for flooring and steps, metal for seating and specific functional elements as well as stainless steel for handles, handrails and banisters. Exposed concrete is used in places, e.g. for the balustrades of the entrances and exits. Overall, the aim is to achieve the greatest possible robustness on the one hand and low-maintenance use of all materials on the other. The structural implementation allows for easy replacement of individual elements of the modular construction kit.

Lighting
The tried-and-tested "Vienna System" light strip is continued by means of indirect lighting as a demarcation from the roadway. In addition, the various areas are illuminated evenly and generally also by indirect lighting. Glare is avoided by the planned lighting concept. Important functions such as seating niches, display cabinets or waste garbage cans are highlighted by additional light sources. The entrances and exits are indirectly illuminated by light sources embedded in the concrete parapet. LED technology is consistently used as the light source.

Safety
The simple and clear design of the stations ensures a high level of safety.
