"The planners are thus demonstrating the vision and clarity with which their predecessors laid the foundations for the current state. They have created a new order on the site that incorporates the existing buildings and, with their strategy, offer a resilient and adaptable basis for future operations - detached from the architectural zeitgeist and the rapid development of medicine."
- Werner Binotto

WORKING ON THE GENERATION PROJECT
Reflections on hospital construction

The winning project of the competition by Fawad Kazi with the planning consortium PG KSSG-OKS ... almost completely preserves the green space along Rorschacher Strasse and thus gives the site its identity. In addition, the project follows a stringent overall concept in all expansion stages: Once all the buildings have been constructed after stage 3, three new high-rise buildings will complement the existing ensemble. Until then, stages 1 and 2 offer convincing figures in urban development, as the most important constants have been established.

An outstanding feature of this project is that all the buildings are already connected to each other in the first stage and that one building, House 10, enables the various organizational changes that the extension requires. At the end of the work, this "castling house" will remain standing and will continue to be used: This means that the business does not require any temporary accommodation. The long block, which is inserted between bed tower 04 and the historic building 01, will connect the existing buildings (MIPS building 03A) with the two new buildings - building 07A in the south-western corner and OKS to the east. The result is impressive: at first floor level, all the buildings are connected to each other around the central courtyard, while below ground, a two-storey channel system allows the movement of people and goods.

The architectural qualities of the project meet the aforementioned requirements and thus lay the foundation for a long service life, as a distinction is made structurally between the long-lasting public programs and the operational parts that require more flexibility. This order affects the floor plans as well as the sections and room heights. The planning consortium has developed a strategy that spatially absorbs the permanent change in use. This structure of rooms with different characteristics is surrounded by a "cloak" with massive frames made of prefabricated artificial stone, which differs in its details depending on where it is used. This strategy also points beyond the day and, with its legible language, offers sufficient space for future developments in expression.

Scenario

"In addition to functional reasons, there are also compositional reasons for the position and proportions of the high-rise buildings. To prevent the towers from collapsing into a huge volume as you walk around the building complex, they have to have a certain slenderness. What interests me here is the phenomenon of parallax: if you change your point of view, the towers seem to move towards each other."
