The exhibition "Comprehensible Architecture" takes a look at the interaction between architecture and one of its smallest designable components: the door handle. Door handles are architecture in miniature and reflect the creative attitude of their designers in terms of form and use.
The exhibition focuses on the door handle designed by Walter Gropius and his office manager Adolf Meyer, one of the design icons of the 20th century. From a sculptural door handle by Le Corbusier for a processional door of the Notre-Dame-du-Haut chapel in Ronchamps to an unadorned handle plate by Sep Ruf for the Chancellor's Bungalow in Bonn, the exhibition shows the range of different trends that followed the Bauhaus.
Using the example of the door handle, the exhibition not only illustrates the cultural history of three centuries, but also the associated design and construction concepts of architects and designers and their preferences for certain materials and material combinations. Examples by Schinkel, Mies van der Rohe, Kollhoff, Ingenhoven, Chipperfield, Graft, Kazi and many others are shown. (Schweizer Baumuster-Centrale Zurich / FSB Franz Schneider Brakel GmbH + Co KG)
