DESCRIPTION
I occasionally go on forays through the various DIY stores in the city of Zurich. The focus is on a curious and above all unbiased view of materials, shapes and colors. Fictitious projects are created from the huge pool of materials by mentally distorting functions and scales. I would like to present one of them below.
Model
A pack of 11 plastic floor plates, which together cover the area of 1m2, forms the starting point of my work. 10 of the 11 panels are joined together to form a spatial structure enclosed on all sides with the proportions of 1:1:2. One plate remains.
Photographs
Through targeted searching with the camera, atmospherically dense images of the model are created in combination with light. Four selected photographs are reproduced on paper in A1 format.
Installation
The installation includes the model, the large-format reproductions of the photographs and a wall in between. The model is hung on the ceiling side and the photographs on the wall side. The remaining 11th floor panel is placed on the floor side under the hanging model and refers to its original purpose.
The project attempts to explore the boundaries of architecture. What is architecture? Where does architecture end and where does it begin? Can an everyday product such as a plastic floor panel ultimately become a concrete reference for an architectural project? Can the design process be transformed or even reversed by relativizing the function and scale of such references? Does the actual discovery process follow the supposedly built? What does context, program or construction mean in this context?
These questions are to be raised by the project contribution and hung in the room, so to speak. (Fawad Kazi)
