DESCRIPTION In addition to my architecture studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and my first years of practice as an architect, I undertook a three-month study trip with my friend and colleague Thomas Fischer in 2001. Our common interests took us to Iran, Egypt and Turkey. This selection promised an exciting starting point in the sphere of activity of three continents.
The stay in each of these countries consisted of a two-week visit to the cities of Tehran, Cairo and Istanbul as well as a two-week trip overland. Our focus was on the current development of the major cities and contemporary architecture on the one hand and the traces of past advanced civilizations and Islamic architecture on the other. A dialog with local architects and urban planners based on specific building projects provided direct access to the respective building culture. At the same time, the individual study of historical testimonies led to complementary impressions. (Fawad Kazi)
